Step into the past, when "Coal was King". The Atlas Coal Mine is a registered provincial historic resource and designated National Historic Site, which preserves the vast coal mining heritage of Alberta. Walk the interpretive trails around an original mine site; join an interpreter for a climb to the top of Canada's last wooden tipple or don caps and lamps and head into the underground conveyor tunnel and hike up to the mine entrance. Step into the now quiet wash house; enter a fully furnished miner's shack; walk around antique machinery; or watch the award winning video "Thunder in the Valley". Displays, trails, interpretive programs and much more. Don't miss the unique souvenir collection in the Miner's Lamp Gift Shop. Washrooms, snacks and picnic area. The site is open to the public throughout the summer, and year-round for group bookings. Individual, family and group rates available. Address: 15 minutes east of Drumheller, 110 Century Drive, | East Coulee, AB | T0J 1B0 [ Map ] Tel: 403 822-2220
